An End to Absence
09.11.04 (4:20 am) [edit]
|
A long while had passed since last I wrote here, and the accomplishments I sought to achieve with the creation of this blog have all vanished. All the projects I sought to do, have faded.
But such was life that it spun me this way and that. I hope that this is a return, then.

Late on all subjects
08.15.04 (1:23 pm) [edit]
I figure im just about late in every category of my hobbies. I've told Pinda I'd be done with the little bit of SQL days ago, and I've reall been slacking on Androicic Interface, and it's basically a case of my life getting me and working too much.
NOT too good an idea right now, if I may add.
But I am hoping to make it up to you guys. At least, I'm doing some sketches. Have fun with this one:

cnt02 - project declaration
08.07.04 (9:07 am) [edit]
I tried today to get back to painting, but I feel that it is a no-go today. So, I suppose I'll just fall on starting on the cnt02 series counters.
The cnt02 counter will dramatically differ from the cnt01 counter. While the first is designed primarily to display the number of visitors to a website, the second is designed for traffic analysis, rather than to showing off the world the number of people on your site.
To do that, the counter will become a miniature spying tool, collecting as much useful information about the people who come to the website(s) as it is possible using PHP and mySQL (an example of what is not possible is bandwidth analysis, since you can't, to the best of my current knowledge, collect the file sizes involved).
Unfortunately, since the counter must be capable of running from a non-PHP capable site, the on-site parts of it must be universally accepted. This means I'm going to collect some of the data using javascript.
This brings me to the first item for collecting. Since I want the same code to be able to count different pages of the same website, I'd like to know which page is calling the counter. Since the counter is being called using an Iframe, it does not naturally know who is summoning it (I think). I can't see a way to do this from the main code (and if you see one, please tell me) – so I'm just going to send the code the data through the Iframe with a querystring. No problem for the javascript involved.

cnt01 - last tweaks to the counter
08.06.04 (6:18 am) [edit]
Well, as you might have noticed, I've done a couple of changes with the cnt01 counter. Mainly, I made a few slight corrections to the iframe (which should continue for a bit until I get it right) – which is no longer with that absurd scrollbar (but since I like the whole white background to the counter I'll leave it like that instead of linking to the web-log's style-sheet).
Also, I removed all the idiotic debugging text from the counter, and accidentally also removed some important code (this because, as was noted, my code is written in a very non-pro manner, meaning it's easy to debug but not using all the nifty ideas that the manuals say are the standards).
So now this is all running smoothly, and I'll keep it running for you all to see and compare. I'll make another version of the cnt01 series counter, this time with a more intelligent code, but that's the end of the line for this generation of A0's cnt01 counters.
The next generation should be a leap upwards, if you're interested ;).

cnt01 - counter is working, but not pretty yet
08.05.04 (7:08 am) [edit]
So, as you can see by the ugly display to the right, the cnt01 php/sql counter is now working. It needs a fair bit of formatting before it's a usable tool, but it's working and counting away hits to my website.
You can see it to the right, below the real counter.
It's also a bit stupider than the other counter (will change in the future though). So it's supposed to count a lot more.
Enjoy the show!
P.S.: I'd like to thank panda for helping me with the debugging of this. These little quotation marks would have gotten me if it were not for him.

CNT01 - php/sql counter project
08.03.04 (4:52 am) [edit]
I've been studying SQL for a couple of hours now, and it seems to me that while I do have some hteoretical udnerstanding of the subject, nothing's going to sink in until I make some script on my own.
I think of what's out there to do, that's simple enough to begin with but also has room for improvement, and stare at my posts from below ranting about crappy counters.
So, my first PHP/SQL project is going to be a very simple counter for my test site. basically speaking, it's going to have a database structure composed of a single table, containing a single record composed of a single variable. whenever the page loads, the variable gets upped by one, and this is saved in the database. Then, the data is being printed on screen for the user to see.
Very rudimentary, not refined or efficient - certainly not bandwidth wise - but it will work.
anyway, I've been far to much engrossed in this computer thing for today, so it's time to log off.

More sketches
08.02.04 (11:40 am) [edit]
Here below is yet another practice sketch that I'm doing near the end of the day. I fear that this is all that you can expect of me, today – as my endevours to proceed with Androidic Interface are still futile, and my pursuit of PHP knowledge had not yet reached the stage where it's of any interest to anyone.
Just to keep you updated, I can now keep pre-made tables updated. Next – creating and deleting tables.

Dog sketch to keep my hands trained.
07.31.04 (12:47 pm) [edit]
It's a good thing, from time to time, to just relax a bit and sit in front of a painting with a simple tool- and just sketch. No thought, no complex design, no failing attempt to do anatomy from one's head – just you, the pen, and the reference.
You have no idea how therapeutic this is. And in the long run, it's also the best way to improve.
Anyway, this is the product for you guys, and if you've any crit, it's much appreciated.

possible antispam tool- ideas
07.31.04 (12:07 am) [edit]
during my study of PHP, i started thinking about how what I want from my counter is not what I am getting. On my development website, I have webaliser installed - and while I do have some additional requests from a tool such as this, the nature of the webaliser is [i]exactly [/i] what I would like to see in a counter on my site.
Anyway, this is not why I am posting. I am posting because I just saw a PHP application that logs web-robots (aka crawlers), and lists the IP of the system they are running on.
If you havn't figured it out yet, this is an effective antispam tool for the aggressive nuker - because it will detect the spammers IP - and therefore his true computer identity - allowing you to launch attacks against him.
That is, if he's not running some fancy protection, i suppose.
I don't know if this is really effective, but it's an interesting gadget i'll have to take a closer look at.

study of PHP - observations
07.30.04 (6:25 am) [edit]
I am currently going through the PHP/mySQL tutorials, just implementing lessons and trying to figure out stuff. Basically, there are a lot of small details that I can't quite grasp yet – but these will come when I start making my own scripts rather than pasting some readymade examples.
Still, a couple of notes for later:
a) A while loop, as I already know, breaks out if the variable is 0. therefore, since in the example the script prints lines until the loop exits, the first line is nonzero (1), and a 0 result in the "which line am I in?" function means that I've passed all the lines already.
This is an important change from standard arrays, which usually start at number 0.
b) Reading from the database, even through the variable, behaves like reading from a file. That is, my position is incremented by one each time I read – automatically.

choosing a new project
07.30.04 (12:17 am) [edit]
For a while now, I was thinking of having a big project, that is all my own. I had a multitude of ideas, in several directions – starting with writing a book or a comic strip, to building something.
I had a very interesting conversation yesterday, which kind of fixed my thoughts in this matter. In truth, it was I who did the talking. I realized that, while I do enjoy making comic strips, I do not yet have the skill to make my real ideas a success. And so, I should enter comic collaborations on the writer's side of things.
Secondly, as for writing, I realized that the muse falls on me seldom. And while I do think that I have some talent in the area, my output is not quite enough to peruse as a big project.
So it's going to be programming. For a while I wanted to study PHP and mySQL, and become proficient enough to find work in the area with it. So I suppose a big project in this field – preferably a multi-user computer game – will provide both opportunities for me to study the system, and be a good addition to my portfolio when I'm done with it.
Anyway, right now I am thinking of trying on "Diplomacy" – though I do have my own game design which I might do if this succeeds. If any of you don't know Diplomacy, you should familiarize yourselves with one of the best games ever.
It is very simple, in truth, but also very complex. It will provide opportunities for study in every direction.
Anyway, I've set up a nice site at a comfortable PHP+mySQL capable web-host, and I am on my way. ;)

in a creative slump
07.29.04 (9:59 am) [edit]
Have you ever tried to do something again and again and again and it just does not come out?
I have, for the past week, spent half an hour, even more, every day, trying to sketch Mia and Elizabeth for Androidic Interface. For a while, it is a complete no-go.
Now, I suppose that with all my hot air and resolution, I might have fooled you to believe that I am a true professional. And that is in-fact what I want to be remembered of me from this journal – that my approach, if not my skill, has been methodical, steady and constant.
I suppose that the difference between this and the true pro, is that the pro, regardless of his skill level, can work through these little setbacks and still come up with a finished painting each time he sits down with a pen in his hand.
But it is time to update you folk, and update you I shall. So here lies this rant against my self.
More as progress goes, A0.

counter rant
07.21.04 (12:47 pm) [edit]
this is a bit of a short rant about the basic tblog counter.
didn't you notice that it increments way to many times? there's no way my site has [i]that[/i] much traffic.
So finally, I sit down to see what is about, and I get to the following conclusions:
a) when I play with the style, it increments every time i click "save" and it pops up the window to tell me if my changes are nice.
b) when I post a log entry, it will increase. also when I add a link, when i play with the style, et cetera.
c) plus, if I set my homepage, it will just add and add and add.
So eventually i decided to get a different free counter. see it on the right? anyway, it will not count any two subsequent page loads from the same IP. Meaning, mistakes are down to 50% (rather than 1000%).
I suppose, though, that I can't put much of my pride on 8 visitors

Androidic Interface (5): Review of character Bios
07.20.04 (4:59 am) [edit]
It appears that I have received an interesting letter, describing the desired appearance of the various characters. So, it is interesting to me to compare my own study notes (below, in response to the concept sketch by K and the script) on the ideas presented by K, and the specific instructions given by her as of late.
For the purpose of my work, I am only dealing with the first four characters – as they alone appear in the scene I am doing right now.
I am currently doing designs– which are why the Bios are of interest to me. As I have stated, I felt that the sketches were a little limited, and thus chose to elaborate, based on my own text analysis.
In the end, I chose to reject most of this file. I hope I am right.
a) Haircuts
The problem of haircuts is the first one I encountered in the concept sketches. In slight differences, all the haircuts were basically the same one: variants of the "long, loosely worn straight hair". This is repeated in the bios, as hair is either shoulder length or mid-back. The differences, tassels and bangs, appear to me as add-ons, so that the same haircut would look different.
K chooses to correct the problem of character recognition by coloring the hair of the various characters boldly. The colors used are Purple, Maroon, Red, and to make things a bit simpler, the old fashioned and relatively natural blonde.
My mind works differently. While color-coding is a good and simple way to classify office supply or parts in a warehouse, people in a painted piece should reflect in their styles the personalities they bare. I am, in contrast with the anime-influenced K, relatively a realist. And my part in all this is to prevent this being a cliché anime.
So as for haircuts, I choose not to listen to K – though I should tell her as such ASAP (that is, when I have good sketches of all four characters and I'll mail it to her as a counter-proposal).
B) Clothing.
I have based my design of Rebecca and Rei on the assumption that Rei is an ordered, more mature person, while Rebecca is the "girl from dance class". The ideas presented in K's letter are a direct counter to my own, in that she would like to see Rei in trainers and Rebecca in a more invested outfit.
It is less important to me to agree or disagree with K here. More to the point is to understand how and why her thoughts run opposite to mine, so that I can make the story better in the long run.
I went over the personality notes in the bios, and there is nothing there, about Rebecca and Rei, to contradict the conclusions that I have made earlier (though, I will note that there are some interesting findings for the personality section). So I must say that I cannot truly relate one way or another to K's choice (hmmm… does it not sound like the title of a CD???) – Exempt maybe that she would like to have Rebecca appear better, and to put her in trainers is counter to that.
But, as I believe now that Rebecca is more of a jock than previously stated – mainly based on her personality notes, I feel that my own observations are preferable to K's design. Therefore, in this point, I stand my ground.
Elizabeth's clothing is the next problem. Her design notes below describe her as a shy, sweet person. She is distant, secluded, but also needy and would probably cling to anyone offering her friendship.
Now, she's wearing fuck-me pants, by K's design. Fuck-me pants (AKA short shorts) and a grandfather's undershirt. Quite a revealing ensemble, if I would say so. To my opinion, such does not fit a shy person… unless there is some strong influence on her on account of other people – who's style, would have to be similar. I don't see that here, and so my judgment would have to go against K on this one too.
In a way, I think I should switch her attire with that of Mia. Mia by K is a loud, outgoing person, and by Me she is a charismatic person. Part of being charismatic is standing out – so maybe something a bit more unique, like a boyish outfit (say, 3/4 pants and a sleeveless T?) would go well for her – or maybe a patterned jeans with some stitches visible. Elizabeth should get the simpler T-shirt, maybe with the little puppy logo K likes, and the pair of jeans.
c) Personality
I have no quarrel with K's description of Mia's personality. There is nothing to contrast "caring" and "outgoing" with "charismatic". And so long as you don't turn her into a joke, loud is something that can be easily worked in.
Elizabeth is a pacifier in the scenes. The actions taken by her are not those of a spectator, and she is involved in the scenes. Thus, she cannot be the stand-aside that K says her to be. While I do not disagree that she is shy, she is obviously a lot less fragile than she is supposed to be
Rebecca is supposed to be a good person, in contrast with Rei. And yet, her immediate resolution, turning to violence, marks her in my eyes as a class queen, one of the vein chicks from dance club, or a female school bully. She is the undeniable lord of her little cadre, and any who would oppose her power must be dealt with – socially and physically, in any order. As she is popular, and probably pretty, this is accepted by the other classmates.
Rebecca is the true villain here, despite her appearance on the hero side of things. This makes her a very interesting character to me, and one that I will be happy to deal with in the future. Her portrayal as a hero in the story, opposite to her actions, creates a contradiction, and also the best of all story hooks – tension.
She is written by K to be a strong, protective character. I do not object. But rather, her depiction as the opposition to the nasty Rei is what I refuse.
Rei, on the other hand, is mentioned as innately nasty. While her sarcastic remarks are by no means polite, I see no reason to believe that this outcast is truly the villain she is said to be. I wonder if K, reading this, will introduce some interesting background event that will tell us all very bluntly that Rei is evil.
Rei is not as strong as she appears. She is an outcast, though she attempts to communicate. But her rationality and mental age – setting her apart – is the very tool she would use to infiltrate the little cadre. This will not succeed of course, because she is different.
Plus, she's got the class queen as a foe.
I don't see any reason to portray her as Evil. I understand that Mia or whomever will need to have some kind of opposing object to try her new powers against (or to unleash the doppelganger robot at), but that's no reason to describe her as simply nasty, without at least backing this up in the story. For the purposes of designing Rei, I would rather understand her than accept her as she is written.

comic book contest
07.20.04 (3:48 am) [edit]
While I am still occupied with "Androidic Interface", the opportunity has come up to join a serious comic-book writing contest. This contest is pretty big, and the prizes include, among other things, the nationwide publication of the comic beginning with a first page that is the contest's submission.
This is for unpublished comic-book writers, and the magazine in question is local, though successful nationwide. The project in question needs to be an ending one, rather than an infinitely continuing one.
I will not pass on this contest, and so I should create a script. Unfortunately, I do not have any independent project ready at this point – and the only thing I have been truly working on, a project called "Out", is completely stuck.
Moreover, the people I will go up against are highly skilled. As I am not a superb painter, there is no possible way for me to out-paint the other participants. The likelihood is that I will be the underdog in the art department. The only way to win this is through writing – where I believe it is still possible to have a relative, if marginal, advantage.
Thus, if any of you guys have an interest in helping me out by collaborating with me, either in writing a complete script or helping me perfect my own, this is a formal request- though it only applies if you're really good.
As I said, this is the real thing. Should I, and any who works with me, win this thing, it is the leap from amateur, to professional. It is something worthy of being in one's resume.
Help welcome.

Androidic interface (4): More stuff from K
07.19.04 (10:18 am) [edit]
So, I opened my mailbox today and I find a letter from K, containing a character bios brief on "Androidic Interface". This is the thing I've asked her a couple of days ago, prior to becoming involved in the project, and I'm rather happy to have received it now.
Here it is, enclosed (more words after that). Review in the next post.:

androidic interface (3): conceptual designs
07.17.04 (7:45 pm) [edit]
Ok, this is a second design, for Rei, done over the morning before I need to go and do life.

This design, as is the former, comes from real life. A girl I knew, who was industrious, hard working and intelligent. Only, she was shunned by those around her.
Another source of inspiration - though to a greatly lesser extent - for this piece is the exellent webcomic [url=http://www.jushin-manga.com/]"Rules of Make Belief"[/url].
As you can see, I've deliberately differentiated Rei from Rebecca. Her hair-style is different, her clothes are more mature, less sporty, and her skin-tone is darker (her name is Asian, and thus she needs the darker complexion). I also wanted her to be less pretty, and I think I'm managing that.
This, to contrast the two, and to augment the difference in characters – while one is emotional and whimsy, the other is ordered and rational.
Again, crit welcome.

androidic interface (2): conceptual designs
07.17.04 (7:21 am) [edit]
So, I didn't really do much work on it yet, but I've a first conceptual design out for Rebecca. Ofcourse, like in all first sketches, it might change a great deal 'till im done.

The way i see it, she's a bit of a "chick from dance", kind of girl, just a bit full of herself and the likes. Also, I based her design on some amazingly looking girl I never dared talk to.
problem is, her design looks a bit too lod right now. My tendency is to paint people in their early twenties and the likes, and here i need to paint 14 year-olds. i don't really know how to fix this, though - but i think that if I make her slimmer and flatter, plus work a bit on the face, it will make the point.
I told you I wasn't [i]that [/i]good.
So, there it is, Crit welcome:

Androidic Interface (1): Text Analisys prior to character design.
07.17.04 (4:58 am) [edit]
In twenty minutes I have to go do other stuff, but I thought I'd just go over the script a bit, and see what I can find as far as the characters are involved.
I already have a concept sketch or two on my own machine, but since I am not exactly certain that they fit the characters in question, I prefer to keep them offline for a little bit more, until a more methodic inspection of the characters is made.
Quite obviously what I have in my hands need to be analyzed by me, since the briefs I've gotten from the writer (see below) are insufficient for me to work on them seriously (oh, sure, I can spew a design or two randomly, but that would negate my ability to learn something from this project).
The first section of the script probably takes place in the schoolyard. The scene opens with three characters, Mia, Rebecca and Elizabeth, and soon admits a fourth character, Rei.
Rei is evidently well acquainted with the group, though obviously not part of it. She is probably in friendly terms with both Elizabeth and Mia, despite of her (reference: concept sketch notes) animosity towards Rebecca. Hence, she interjects into the existing conversation.
Rei is, in contrast with Rebecca, a rational creature (and probably mentally older too). While Rebecca instigates a confrontation in response to Rei's observation – a contradiction of her own intuition – Rei's response remains controlled. In contrast, Rebecca is infuriated, to the point of silliness.
At this point, Elizabeth and Mia appear to me as secondary characters in this scene. That K desires to keep everyone in focus causes the rest of the text to appear forced. This is because she's decided to introduce too many characters at once, of course.
Still, Elizabeth appears to me lifelike, childish and random, while Mia appears devoted and friendly.
On that basis it is likely to assume that Rei's ties with the group is through Mia.
And this is where the first scene is concluded. The characters decide to "go to the park", a scene I will not go into right now.
[LINE]
So what have we so far:
Rebecca: Emotional, childish, and inspired. Rei: Rational, methodical and old. Elizabeth: Random and playful. Mia: friendly, easily connected, charismatic.
My intuition says that the hero to this script, should it be continued over the next couple of chapters, should be Elizabeth. Both Rei has a definite role in the story, and Rebecca is too uninteresting as a character. However, writer's notes say it's going to be Mia – a problematic choice, in my view, because she is not developed.
Of course this might play more like a "group" story – I.E. Power Rangers or Cowboy Bebop something like that. But still, I feel as if the introduction is problematic at best.
Anyway, next step, conceptual design.

Androidic interface: Introduction to collab comic
07.16.04 (2:35 pm) [edit]
or: Why do I collab with people who can't write?
I'm actually glad that I've made a decision to try and stay in the painter's corner for the duration of this project. Also, I'm glad that I have not commited myself for the entierety of it (Sorry, K, if this does not flatter you. It is not meant to).
So let me tell you what happened during the last two collabs. I start corresponding with the guy, and partially becuase I suck, I fail to notice before plunging into the project that the writing standards are not very sufficient for my taste.
So I start helping the guy patch up the work, before I start painting things. And ofcourse mostly these are kids, so they don't take criticism as good as J, S or C, for instance. In the end, it's either me who backs out of a porly written piece, or they getting worn down by my endless critique.
I suppose that when it comes to writing, i like to be a perfectionist (not that im that skilled, though).
BUT, back on topic.
Androidic interface (yes, i know, it's a crapy name) is a small comic idea written by some forumite who asked for help. I told her that I'll have a go at the first chapter, just because I havn't done a comic in a while and would like to get back on the saddle.
So, i asked her to send me the script and some descriptions of the case, and got the two next files by email:
concept images of the characters: http://img46.photobucket.com/albums/v142/a0000/pro jects/lady" title="http://img46.photobucket.com/albums/v142/a0000/pro jects/lady" target="_blank"http://img46.photobucket.com/...%20k/androdicinterface.jpg first chapter script (change file extension to txt before opening): see comments. File attached there.
Anyway, you can see for yourself the level of this girl's work. she doesn't paint very well, her writing is like a 14 years old, and i think that's more or less her age. I suppose im not going to have loads of fun working on this one (not that im that talented myself... ::(:).
But, unlike in previous collabs, I promised myself im staying out of writing on this one, focusing solely on doing sketches and art for someone, trusting her completely. So though i know it's not going to be a very high quality product, my way for improvement - through putting myself in the challange of her work - is paved.
[LINE]
This is basically your cliche "girls finishing elementary school" setting that you see in alot of b-class anime. i suppose I could puke, but I havn't actually touched that subject yet, so I might aswell. At least that's the first segment, which is what I'm commited myself to doing.
So basically, I feel like there is a lot of work to be done. The script has to be mildly re-written, just so I can feel comfortable enough working with it and not being surprised by some random girl who somehow shows up in mid story. All the characters need to be re-designed because they all look like 14 year old girls with t-shirts and long hair. They need definition.
updates on progress.

Ok,
so I said I was not going to give you a peek to my personal life - but this is actually worth me money, so I profit from your little shameless intrusion.
a part-time job of mine, apart from the rest of my life, is translating texts. I translate hebrew to english texts (and vice versa), and have attained a measure of skill in it.
I charge 7 bucks a page, and if you have any work for me (and can pay the price), I'd apreciate an email.
thanks in advance, a0

introduction to my self

So, I actually got a Blog. I suppose I'd better explain myself a little.
The name's a0. That's probably all im going to say about it here, because this is not a truly personal weblong. More of a "work journal", to keep me tidy and keep me pumping out those sketches.
Yes, I paint here and there. Mainly, I do silly doodles and sketchy pen-work. But here and there there are some other things. Most people don't like my art - and to tell you the truth, i don't give a damn if you are one of those people.
If, on the other hand, you choose to stick around, see what I've to offer, you might get a brief examination of how my mind works.
ummm...well...actually there will probably not be any really personal things written here. My personal stuff is for friends, and not for the web. but still, a part of me can be deduced by what I write, how I go about things, et cetera.
So why did I really set this thing up? Simple. It seems like it's the easiest, simplest, most effective way to track my work - in the present and in the past - as well as let other people see it, relatively in close progression with the work in question.
I really hope you enjoy your stay, a0.
